M.T. STEYN & JAN RUITER

“Die Voorste Agterryer”

Aan die begin van Julie 1901, was Pres. Steyn van die OVS te velde saam met lede van sy regering naby die dorpie Reitz. Vroeg die oggend van 11 Julie 1901, terwyl Pres. Steyn te velde was het Jan Ruiter, sy agterryer, opgestaan om solank koffie te maak, maar het opgemerk dat ‘n mag berede Britse soldate afjaag op die kamp.

Hy storm die president se tent binne, waarna hy Steyn (wat nog in sy nagklere was!) na sy perd, Scott neem sodat hy kan ontsnap.

Tydens hul vlug het Steyn ‘n skoot gehoor, en gesien dat Ruiter van sy perd gespring het.
Van die perd afgespring, is Ruiter deur ‘n Britse Offisier gekonfronteer & gevra wie die man op die perd was.

“Dis sommer ‘n ou boer”, het hy geantwoord en is daarna beveel om die Offisier na die president se tent te neem. Ruiter het die man in sirkels gelei om sodoende vir Steyn kans te gee om te ontsnap.
Op daardie stadium wou die Britse soldate die hoed (keil) en mantel van die president verbrand, waarop Ruiter geroep het: ” A nee a! Julle kan nie sommer my klere verbrand nie!”.

Hy het daarna die keil self gedra, en het die President se adjudant later weer vir Ruiter raak geloop, en gevra hoe dit met die President se keil op sy kop gaan. Ruiter se antwoord was: “Dit is maar swaar om eendag Ruiter en die ander dag president te wees!”

Pres. Steyn het tydens sy vlug ‘n boer teëgekom en kommandeer toe die man se hoed – hulle sou later weer ontmoet, waartydens die president aangedring het dat hulle dadelik na ‘n winkel gaan om vir die man ‘n nuwe hoed te koop!

Ruiter sou vir Pres. Steyn vergesel na die Vredesonderhandeling wat die Oorlog beëindig het,en te danke aan sy slim optrede & lojaliteit teenoor Steyn, is ‘n katastrofiese gebeurtenis vermy.

“Jan Ruiter”

Jan Ruiter was die Griekwa-agterryer van die OVS President, Marthinus Steyn wat hom vergesel het na die Anglo-Boereoorlog.

Vanwee sy vinnige optrede en vernuf het hy verseker dat President Steyn kon vlug voor die Britse berede magte hom gevangene kon neem.

Ruiter het tot en met sy dood in 1944 op die President se plaas, ‘Onze Rust’, gewoon en werk, en is digby die sogenaamde ‘Boom van Sameswering’ begrawe (dié boom was van Steyn se geliefkooste plekke om te ontspan), en is die boom in 1950 as Nasionale Monument verklaar – wat indirek Ruiter se graf ‘n Nasionale Monument maak.

‘Thinus Steyn

M.T. Steyn was ‘n Vrystaatse prokureur wat as Staatsprokureur gedien het voor sy verkiesing tot President na die bedanking van F.W. Reitz in 1895. Sy presidentskap word veral gekenmerk deur sy toewyding aan sy volk & bereidwilligheid om alles vir sy mense se vryheid op te offer. Generaal Botha het na hom verwys as “die siel van die vryheidstryd”, en dien hy as toonbeeld van Boere-weerstand tydens die Tweede Anglo-Boereoorlog, waar hy saam met sy burgers te velde was, en dien as die laaste president van die Oranje-Vrystaat. Na die Oorlog het hy & sy vrou, Tibbie, hulself onvermoei beywer vir die heropbou van sy volk. Interessant is dat sy pa-hul huisvriende was met Pres. Brand!
