JOHANNES HEDRICUS BRAND was ‘n Kaapse prokureur & regsprofessor wat in 1863 na die Vrystaat emigreer het na die presidentskap van dié Republiek hom aangebied is. Hy was baie populêr onder die Vrystaatse burgers, en is 3 maal herverkies tot president. Onder sy bewind het die O.V.S die naam verwerf as ‘Die Model Republiek’ vanweë sy uitstekende administrasie, opvoedkundige stelsel & voorspoed. Sy was leuse “Alles sal regkom as elkeen sy plig doen” en dien hy vir 24 jaar as president tot met sy afsterwe in 1888.

FRANCIS WILLIAM REITZ, was ‘n praktiserende prokureur in Kaapstad wat in 1874 op die versoek van Pres. Johannes Brand die pos as Hoofregter van die Oranje-Vrystaat aanvaar het. Met Brand se afsterwe in 1888 word Reitz as opvolger verkies en dien as President tot 1895 waarna hy bedank weens swak gesondheid. Na sy herstel verhuis hy in 1897 na Pretoria waar hy as regter in die hooggeregshof dien, en word verkies tot Staatsekretaris 1898. In dié hoedanigheid stel hy die ultimatum op aan Brittanje wat sou lei tot die uitbreek van die Tweede Anglo-Boereoorlog. Hy bly te velde tot die Oorlog se einde, waarna hy ‘n ondertekenaar was van die Vrede van Vereeniging-verdrag. Reitz was ook ‘n gedugte skrywer, en word hy gesien as een van die voorvaders van Afrikaans as kulturele taal.

MARTHINUS THEUNIS STEYN, was ‘n Vrystaatse prokureur wat as Staatsprokureur gedien het voor sy verkiesing tot President na die bedanking van F.W. Reitz in 1895. Sy presidentskap word veral gekenmerk deur sy toewyding aan sy volk & bereidwilligheid om alles vir sy mense se vryheid op te offer. Generaal Botha het na hom verwys as “die siel van die vryheidstryd”, en dien hy as toonbeeld van Boere-weerstand tydens die Tweede Anglo-Boereoorlog, waar hy saam met sy burgers te velde was, en dien as die laaste president van die Oranje-Vrystaat. Na die Oorlog het hy & sy vrou, Tibbie, hulself onvermoei beywer vir die heropbou van sy volk. Interessant is dat sy pa-hul huisvriende was met Pres. Brand!

“DIE JAGHORING”

Die jaghoring wat pryk op die Huis van Oranje se wapenskild is afkomstig van ‘Willem met de Hoorn’ – die bynaam is gebasseer op ‘n gedig in die 12e eeu wat deur hom geïnspireer is, wat verwys na die insident toe ‘n deel van sy neus tydens die beleg van Rome afgekap is, en hy “Guillaume au Court-nez” (Willem die Kort-Neus) genoem is.

Die horing is gebasseer op “Guillaume au Cornet” (wat soortgelyk klink aan die Kort-neus-aanmerking), maar dui op “Willem met die Horing”.

Kol. Gordon, ‘n VOC offisier van Skotse herkoms (waarna Gordonsbaai vernoem is), het tydens ‘n ekspidisie vanaf die Kaap na die binneland die Groote Rivier besoek en herdoop tot die ‘Oranje Rivier’, ter ere van die Nerderlandse Koningshuis en spesifiek, Willem V van Oranje.

Die gebied noord van die rivier sou genoem word Oranje-Vrystaat, en het die wapenskild van die republiek ook die jaghoring bevat wat 700 jaar vroeër met ‘Willem met die Horing’ geassosieer was.

Die ‘Ou Sanna’ voorlaaier geweer is afkomstig vanaf die Voortrekkers wat dit as wapen & jaggeweer gebruik het. In die ontwerp vervang dit die swaard van geregtigheid (Justitia), wat in antieke tye as die voorstelling van gesag was, en die boodskap dra dat geregtigheid vinnig en finaal kan wees.
