“HERBERG VAN DE OCEAAN”

In 1656 gee die Here XVII toestemming dat ‘n taphuis geopen mag word aan die jong kolonie van die Kaap van Goeie Hoop. Sodoende staan Jan van Riebeeck die eerste pag toe aan Annatje Joris van Overtoom, vrou van Hendrik Boom, die hooftuinier van die Kompanjie Tuine.

Sy bedryf die herberg vanuit haar huis met die doel om haar familie se inkomste aan te vul, en mag slegs alkohol aan die burghers verkoop wat direk vanaf die V.O.C aangekoop het.

Annatje het ook met koeie geboer en melk aan die kolonie verskaf wat haar die bynaam “Annatje de Boerin” verwerf het vanweë haar besigheidsvernuf.

Ongelukkig is dit nie bekend of hierdie eerste Kaapse herberg ‘n naam gehad het, of wat dit genoem was nie, maar is dit wel aangeteken dat een van die latere taphuise “De Gouden Anker” geheet het.

Hierdie is ons voorstelling van diè taphuis se naambord wat Kapenaars & gaste aangemoedig het om ‘n glasie rooi by De Gouden Anker Herberg & Taphuys se vuurtjie te kom geniet!
