“…en Broers”

Danie Theron is op 28 jarige ouderdom oorlede naby Gatsrand (hedendaagse Fochville) & is ‘n monument opgerig in 1950 wat sigbaar is vanaf die N2 tussen Johannesburg en Potchefstroom. Die koper vlam bo-op die monument verteenwoordig die vuur wat in Theron se hart gebrand het vir sy volk.

Nog ‘n monument van ‘n knielende Danie met ‘n geweer in die hand is in 2002 deur die voormalige President Mandela onthul, en het by die geleentheid hulde aan Danie Theron se dapperheid, eerlikheid & patriotisme, en het hy genoem dat moderne Suid-Afrika meer ‘Danie Theron’s’ benodig.

Danie is oorlede voor hy enige kinders gehad het, sodoende kon die ontwerp nie “..en Seuns” lees soos wat algemeen deur maatskappye gebruik word nie.

“Die eerste Recce”

Danie Theron se Verkenningskorps was ‘n gewapende mobiele (fiets) eenheid wat gefokus het daarop om informasie in te win, en te herlei na die Generaals, soms deur die linies van die vyand. As leier van die land se eerste verkenningskorps, kan mens in der ware sê dat hy die eerste “Recce” was!

Daniël J.S (“Danie”) Theron was Kommandant van die Wielrijders Rapportgangers Korps, militêre fietsry korps wat deur hom & J.P (Koos) Jooste (later Kommandant Jooste), ‘n fietsry kampioen, gestig is. Hierdie Korps (wat later tot die Theron se Verkenningskorps (TVK) sou ontwikkel), was hoofsaaklik verantwoordelik vir verkenningsmissies asook om boodskappe heen en weer tussen die kommando’s te herlei.Die Opperbevelvoerder van die Britse leër, Lord Roberts, het na Theron verwys as: “Die grootste doring in die vlees van die Britte” & het 4000 man afgesonder om die TVK te vind.

Na verskeie hoogtepunte as kommandant, onder meer toe hy roem verwerf het deur by Paardeberg heen en weer deur die linies van die vyand met ‘n boodskap vir die beleërde gen. Piet Cronje te beweeg. Op 5 September 1900  verken Komm. Theron alleen die koppie naby die Gatsrand gebied en kom te staan teen 7 lede van die berede magte van Marshall’s Horse. Hy vuur ‘n magdom rondtes af met die hoop dat dit sal voorkom dat daar baie meer manskappe saam met hom is. Die artelleriste wat die berede brigade vergesel het, vuur toe hul kanonne op die koppie, en sneuwel hy nadat hy deur skrapnel getref word. Danie Theron word onthou vir sy eerlikheid, betroubaarheid en deursettingsvermoë in onmoontlike situasies.

Daniel J.S (“Danie”) Theron was Commandant of the Wielrijders Rapooprtgangers Corps, a military bicycle unit that was established by him & J.P (Koos) Jooste, a cycling champion. The Wielrijders (that would later becom the Theron’s Reconnaissance Corps) was primarily involved in scouting & reconnaissance missions during the Second Anglo-Boer War.Theron’s single most notable action was during the Battle of Paardeberg, where her cycled to-and-fro through the British lines to relay messages to the beleaguered General Piet Cronje.On 5 September 1900, Comm. Theron was scouting alone on a koppie near Gatsrand, and came face to face with 7 soldiers of the cavalry unit, Marshall’s Horse. He attempted to fire a great volume of shots, hoping that it would give the impression that he was but one soldier of a much bigger force. His firing attracted the attention of the artillery unit that escorted the cavalrymen, who fired on the hill with their cannons. He died after being hit by shrapnel from the artillery fire. Danie Theron will be remembered for his bravery, honesty & perseverance in situations most would deem impossible.
