Description

________________________________________________________________________

In 1795, with the aid of the French Revolutionary Force, William of Orange-Nassau V was removed from power as ruler of the old Dutch Republic, with the United Netherlands becoming a client state of France. Thus, the Batavian Republic was established, borrowing its motto from the French “Liberté, Equalité & Fraternité” (Freedom, equality & brotherhood).

After the Treaty of Amiens, the war waging Britain & France was at a (temporary) end, and all conquered French colonies were handed back to France (which included the Cape of Good Hope in 1803).

According to tradition, the burghers of the Cape were well pleased being freed from British rule, and cheers of “Die Kaap is weer Hollands!” (The Cape is Dutch once again!) filled the streets. Up to this day it is still a popular Afrikaans saying, implying that prosperous times are ahead.
