‘Oom’ Paul Kruger was a man of many talents, but he is rarely remembered for his love of nature. The African tribes during his time referred to him as “Mamelodi”, with the direct translation being “The man who imitates birds”. Mamelodi was the shortened version of ‘Mamelodi’a Tshwane’, meaning “The Whisteling Man of the Apies River”, which was bestowed upon him for the uncanny ability to mimic bird calls.
