By September 1900 the conventional forces of the Boer Republics were largely defeated, whereafter the Anglo-Boer War entered its guerilla phase, with an estimated 20,000 burghers that chose to stay ‘on commando’ to continue the War ‘until the bitter end’.

Coffee was a necessity for the Boers, with even Gen. Ben Viljoen stating in his memoirs “…it is well known that to live without coffee is a severe trial for a Boer…” . He also described how the Boers started making ‘mielie’ coffee by roasting mealies over open coals as one does with coffee beans, and adding milk!
