Simon van der Stel (14 October 1639-24 June 1712), became the last Commander of the Cape of Good Hoop in 1679 (this title was replaced by ‘Governor’ in 1691). He had great plans for the little settlement at the tip of Africa, and establishes the town of Stellenbosch in the same year, which is the oldest European town in South Africa aside from Cape Town.  In 1685 he established Groot Constantia wine farm as example for wine farmers in the colony – Napoleon Bonaparte was an avid fan of the wine produced at Groot Constantia. He requests the Here XVII of the V.O.C to allow French Huguenots with knowledge of cultivating wine to be allowed to settle in the area which is now known as Franschhoek. Although wine was produced in the Cape since the time of Jan van Riebeeck, it was thanks to Van der Stel that South African wines are counted among the best in the world.
