At the end of the First Anglo-Boer War in 1881, the Volksraad of the Zuid-Afrikaansche Republiek (Z.A.R) was assembled & the new leadership was chosen in the form of a ‘Triumvirate’.

Paul Kruger acted as vice president, Piet Joubert as commandant general & Marthinus Wessel (M.W) Pretorius, the incumbent president of the Z.A.R prior to the War, filled the third post.

During the reign of the Triumvirate, friction escalated between Kruger & Joubert, mainly due to their different views on government policies as well as their personalities.

Although both were fierce patriots, Paul Kruger was seen as conservative, but a man of action that tackled problems head on. Piet Joubert on the other hand, was more liberal, a pacifist at heart that would prefer a peaceful solution to conflict.

These two men were opponents in 4 presidential elections between 1883 and 1898, with Kruger being triumphant in all 4 elections, with Joubert acting as Commandant General, positions they both held until their deaths.

Kruger & Joubert were respected men in the international political arena, with both their life stories intertwined in the history of South Africa, and one would find it impossible to discuss the life of one without mentioning the other.
